“To Be Continued” & Yesenia

The end of one chapter is the begging of new one. Mr. Michie sums up the whole book in this last chapter with the graduation of the eighth grade class.  He recounts the past few years he has spent with the classes and how they all have changed and how his view of all the students has changed.  His encounter with Yesenia opens up the floodgates of uncertainty.  Yesenia, rightfully so, is uncertain of her future and where she will end up in life. As her teacher, Mr. Michie comforts her and lets her know it will be okay and her future will be in her hands.  All the while, he’s not sure where she will end up.  The statistics don’t look good for her or any other of Michie’s students.  Mr. Michie teaches us all with a little faith and hard work we can do what we want.  As a teacher, he must take solace in the fact he did all that he could and pray that his students can take on the unexpected and move pat them.
